Art Connects: Share your Story

Our 2009 message is "Art connects." and we need your help identifying the way this has happened in years or generations past. We are looking for true, amazing, sweet, far-fetched, curious, and unexpected ways that Art Alliance Austin (now and in the past) connects people, ideas, organizations, etc.

It can be one connection or a series of them. It can be something you know about or a personal connection. Essentially, it's like the parlor game "Six Degrees of Separation" but it can be any number and doesn't have to be about only.

Example: Art Connects Generations

(pictured left) A group from Summit Senior Living was invited by Art Alliance Austin member Christa Smith to exhibit their art during Art + Style on 2ND Street where the "I am ____." project, commissioned by Art Alliance Austin was headquartered. Through conversation, it was discovered that Norma Mees, artist and resident shown here, previously exhibited her work at Fiesta (now Art City Austin).

Art connects me to the whole wide world. It's in the details of everything I see, be it a painting in a gallery window, a pair of earrings on a friend, a stranger's chic shoes, a shadow cast, a colorful guitar on Congress, a paint-worn doorway, a well-designed typeface or a fine contemporary building arising above a 1950s neon sign, or the color in the sky--the art of it all connects me to everything my eyes can take in. so all of this becomes part of my world, and I'm part of it all, and more inspired and energized because of the connection.

Art Alliance Austin connected me to my husband. ... When I moved to Austin five years ago, I joined the Art Alliance PR committee. A friend I met in the committee introduced me to a friend visiting from Denver. That fabulous man is now my husband, an Alliance volunteer and new art aficionado.

Tuesday I had the privilege of having lunch with the "Grand Dame" of Art City Austin, Daryl Howard. As most of you know Daryl has shown her work in AC for more than 40 years. As Board Chair she wanted to tell that after months of soul searching she has decided to make a career change and will no longer participate in outdoor shows including the 2009 AC. She had tears in her eyes when she told me this. It was a shock to me and I know it will be to those who have been involved for years. We will miss her influence guildance and insight. I can only wish her the best in her new career path and appreciate all she has done for these many years. I hope that at the 2009 AC we can honor her long time commitment and support. We will miss you Daryl and your wonderful art. Tom Coopwood
